Dentonia Park Community Initiatives

Good day Dentonia Park Community!

We're hot off the heels of a meeting with our City Councillor, Janet Davis and what an exciting meeting it was. Janet is keen on supporting our Community's initiatives and shares our enthusiasm for using our beautiful green spaces to realize them. Some fantastic ideas tossed into the mix included community engagement of the Dentonia Park Clubhouse, the Maryland Park playground revitalization, the skating rink, a winter festival, an Easter egg hunt, a community garden and are you ready for this neighbours.... maybe, just maybe, an opportunity to really look at how our awesome parks can be laid out to establish optimum connectivity within our hood and beyond-super cool!

Want to hear more? Janet and her office superstars will help us organize a community meeting to discuss all of the above and beyond and where else could it be? That's right, the Dentonia Park Clubhouse. We'll keep you posted here on the date for this proposed meeting. So get your ideas ready and bring them on Dentonia Park Community.

Have a great weekend Dentonia Park Community and as always we would love to hear from you. Leave a comment or drop us a note at dentoniaparkcommunity@gmail.com.

Maryland Playground Committee Needed

Good day Dentonia Park Community!

Well our Summer holidays may be coming to an end but our fun will keep on going with the eagerly anticipated revitalization of our very own Maryland Park playground. A big thank you to all of our neighbours for their thoughtful and creative comments and suggestions for this new playground.

So what does our community want from this playground? Well the buzz is all about imaginative play, inter-generational play and natural play all in a very unique setting. We expected nothing less from a neighbourhood expressing the very same attributes. No, a cookie-cutter playground won't do here and let's make sure we incorporate sun shade.

If we want to realize our playground ambitions we need to organize our creative ideas for the impending community consultation meeting with our City Councillor. So here's calling on all volunteers to form a committee for the Playground Revitalization of Maryland Park (PROMP). As an added bonus for volunteering you will get an opportunity to choose a better name for this committee!

Maryland Park Playground Revitalization

Good day Dentonia Park Community and good work neighbours! Our voices have been heard and it looks like our little playground in Maryland Park will be getting a complete overhaul in the near future. Councillor Davis has kindly sent a note to our little blog to tell us about the newly secured funds for this playground's replacement. On July 31st, Councillor Davis wrote:

Hi Dentonia Park People,
I'm happy to let you know that I was able to get a playground replacement allocation in the City parks budget for 2013/14.  We will have a community consultation about the improvements you'd like to see.  I look forward to meeting with you to talk about the playground and how we can animate our wonderful green spaces.  Thanks again!

Janet

Let's Talk Palygrounds

Let's Talk Palygrounds

Good day Dentonia Park Community. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

We have some great playgrounds in and around our neighbourhood like our very own awsome playground and splashpad in Dentonia Park - talk about a popular spot in the summer evenings, you can hardly see the playground through the kids and parents. It's so busy, often folks will spillover to our little Maryland Park playground but what a sad sight that play area has become. Poor Maryland Park playground, you look so unloved! Yes, we all have noticed that the little playground is in need of a facelift (or maybe a transplant). What do you say we put a buzz in our City Councillor's ear about this much needed playground revitalization? It would be great to have another fabulous playground in our hood to keep all the kiddies happy. Let's hear from you Dentonia Park Community for a new playground in Maryland Park!

Have a great week Dentonia Park Community and as always we would love to hear from you. Leave a comment or send us a note at dentoniaparkcommunity@gmail.com

Dentonia Park United Church Redevelopment Update

Good day Dentonia Park Community. Last night the developers of 107 Dawes Road and 34 Maryland Blvd., the former site of the Dentonia Park United Church, held a community consultation session to discuss their proposal for the redevelopment of the land occupied by the Church. We had a great community turn-out, including Councillor Davis. As promised for those that could not make it, here is a brief outline of the proposed redevelopment:

Weston Consulting Group Inc., on behalf of their client Aspen Way Developments Ltd., presented a proposal to erect 9 detached, single-family homes on the current site of the Church. The proposal calls for the homes to be approximately 2400 - 2800 square feet, two and half - three stories, each occupying a lot frontage (facing North onto Dentonia Park Ave.) of 7.4 metres with an integrated, street-level garage and drive in the front of the properties, allowing for two car parking.

Naturally, our neighbours had lots of questions and concerns regarding the proposed infill development. Some of these issues included the proposed height of the new homes, parking disruptions, the integration of the new architecture into our neighbourhood, and the preservation of the beautiful mature trees on the subject land.

The developers and consultants have yet to formally submit their proposal to the city and the information provided at last night's meeting served to garner community insight. Councillor Davis will be in contact with the developers as the plans progress and will distribute information to the community as it becomes available.

For more information about this proposal to redevelop the Church lands you can contact our City Councillor, Janet Davis at www.janetdavis.ca or Ryan Guetter from Weston Consulting Group at rguetter@westonconsulting.com.

Who wants to go SKATING?

What better way to beat the soaring summer temperature than to think cool thoughts - the perfect time to start planning our very own Dentonia Park Community Skating Rink!

We have a great outdoor space on our doorsteps that would lend itself to an excellent rink but we need to start planning soon if we want it to happen.

Calling on all skating enthusiasts and Ice Masters - we need volunteers to make this happen.

Send us a note at dentoniaparkcommunity@gmail.com if you're interested. We hope to hear from you soon.

Good day Dentonia Park Community!

You may have noticed a couple of flyers in your mail boxes regarding important community developments.

One notice was left on behalf of Aspen Way Investments Ltd. and Weston Consulting Group Inc. They are the developers of 107 Dawes Road and 34 Maryland Blvd., formerly known as the Dentonia Park United Church. They are proposing a redevelopment of the property for single-detached residential dwellings. This is a shift from the early plans to redevelop the site into multi-dwelling residential housing as described in our previous posts.

If you are interested in finding out more about this redevelopment there will be a community consulting meeting on Tuesday July 24, 2012 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Secord Community Centre, Multipurpose Room at 91 Barrington Ave.

We received also a flyer from the Danforth Enhancement Working Group a residential and business community initiative supported by Councillors Janet Davis and Mary-Margaret McMahon. This group has been formed to help coordinate the efforts of our local businesses, community groups, enforcement agencies and service providers to improve the safety, cleanliness and vibrancy of our stretch of Danforth Ave. The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness for our community members of the various local, municipal and provincial avenues that are available to intervene should we observe or become aware of illegal and/or questionable behaviour around certain establishments (bars),or on our streets, in our parks, laneways, etc. For more information, we encourage you to contact Janet Davis or Mary-Margaret McMahon:

WELOME TO THE NEW DENTONIA PARK COMMUNITY BLOG!

Dentonia Park Community

The Dentonia Park Community Blog has been created to bring neighbours together around our beautiful outdoor space comprised of Dentonia and Maryland Parks.

As community members, we already know what a gem we have sitting right outside our doors. This amazing green space could lend itself to year round organized community events. Some ideas have included a skating rink, summer festival, farmers market, and community environment days. We hope this blog will inspire more great ideas and community involvement to implement the activities that will raise our neighbourhood's enjoyment of our parks and build on our already strong sense of community. We hope also that this blog will further community awareness and involvement by highlighting interesting developments within and adjacent to our neighborhood's boundaries.

This blog is run by the Dentonia Park Community and we would love to hear your ideas and thoughts. You can drop us a note at  dentoniaparkcommunity@gmail.com
